What is EMDR?
What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach. The mind often can heal itself, just as the body does. Most of the time, your mind/body manages new information and experiences without your awareness. However, if you are repeatedly subjected to distress or something out of the ordinary occurs, perhaps traumatizing and overwhelming, one’s own natural coping mechanisms can be overloaded. When this occurs, the distressing and disturbing event or experiences remain unprocessed or ‘frozen’ in the limbic system of your brain. Often the memory is long forgotten, but the feelings such as panic, anxiety, anger, etc. are repeatedly triggered in present encounters. EMDR focuses on creating connections in your brain’s memory networks, allowing the brain to process the traumatic experience in a natural way. During EMDR treatments, YOU remain in control, fully alert and awake. You are able to stop the process at any time.
What can EMDR be used for?
Complex Trauma
PTSD
Anxiety
Panic Attacks
Depression
Phobias
Eating Disorders
Grief
Low Self-Esteem
And more….
Who can use EMDR?
EMDR can be used as part of a brief treatment plan, or as part of a longer psychotherapy plan, as it can be easily integrated with other therapeutic interventions. You and your therapist will work together to determine if EMDR is a good fit for your treatment plan.
The standard EMDR protocol is effective with teens and adults.
